Nanofiltration is a pressure-driven membrane separation process between reverse osmosis and ultrafiltration, and nanofiltration membranes have pore sizes in the range of a few nanometres.
Nanofiltration (NF) is used to separate substances with small relative molecular mass, such as inorganic salts or small organic molecules such as glucose and sucrose, from solvents. Nanofiltration, also known as low-pressure reverse osmosis, is an emerging field of membrane separation technology with separation performance between reverse osmosis and ultrafiltration, allowing some inorganic salts and certain solvents to pass through the membrane to achieve the effect of separation.
NF has the following two characteristics:
1. separation performance for small organic molecules with molecular weights in the hundreds in liquids.
2. The Dornan effect exists for anions of different valence. The charge, valence and concentration of the material have a great influence on the separation effect of the membrane.
Nanofiltration is mainly used in the purification of drinking water and industrial water, wastewater purification and treatment, and the concentration of valuable components in process fluids. Nanofiltration membranes are mostly derived from reverse osmosis membranes, such as CA, CTA membranes, aromatic polyamide composite membranes and sulfonated polyethersulfone membranes.

Difference between NF and RO
Nanofiltration membranes are charged membranes and are capable of electrical adsorption. In the same water quality and environment to produce water, the pressure required by the nanofiltration membrane is less than the pressure required by the reverse osmosis membrane. Therefore, from the separation principle, nanofiltration and reverse osmosis have similar and different sides. The pore size and surface characteristics of nanofiltration membrane determine its unique performance, and it has different Donann potentials for ions with different charges and valences; the separation mechanism of nanofiltration membrane is the coexistence of sieving and dissolution diffusion, and at the same time, it has the effect of charge exclusion, which can effectively remove the divalent and multivalent ions, all kinds of substances with molecular weights greater than 200, and partially remove the monovalent ions and substances with molecular weights less than 200; the separation performance of nanofiltration membrane is the same as that of reverse osmosis membrane, which has the same characteristics as reverse osmosis membrane. The separation performance of nanofiltration membrane is obviously better than ultrafiltration and microfiltration, and compared with reverse osmosis membrane, it has the advantages of partially removing monovalent ions, low process osmotic pressure, low operating pressure, energy saving, and so on.
Nanofiltration separation is more and more widely used in electronics, food and pharmaceutical industries, such as ultrapure water preparation, high concentration of fruit juices, separation of peptides and amino acids, concentration and purification of antibiotics, concentration of whey proteins, nanofiltration membranes coupled with biochemical reactors, and other practical separation processes.
Functions of NF
Nanofiltration membrane has excellent properties such as thermal stability, acid resistance, alkali resistance and solvent resistance, etc. It plays an inestimable role in the recovery of valuable substances in wastewater, and is widely used in the recovery and treatment of various organic wastewater. For example, pesticide waste treatment, whey and antimicrobial desalination, metal recovery in electroplating waste, various petrochemical wastewater treatment. In water treatment, nanofiltration membrane is mainly used for the preparation of softened water, drinking water, can effectively remove the colour, hardness and odour in the water.
Daily chemical wastewater treatment: Application studies of daily chemical wastewater treatment with NF membranes have shown that NF membranes are resistant to acids and alkalis, have excellent retention rates, good removal rates of heavy metals, and no membrane contamination problems. It is estimated that NF membranes may cover more than 90 per cent of daily chemical wastewater treatment due to their lower operating cost than reverse osmosis technology and good removal rate of small organic molecules.
